Title: Heterogeneous Array of Programmable Logic: Push The Limit of Programmable Device

Abstract: Programmable logic device has been a solution for quick and convenient
implementation of digital system.
Its application, however, is limited to prototyping or developing low-end small-volume
products.
This is because an FPGA, for example, is slower than ASIC by about 4 times, takes 35
times more area, and consumes 14 times more power.
The fundamental reason why programmable device is so worse than ASIC is its inherent
regularity.
If we break down this concept of regularity, i.e. if we introduce irregularity to
programmable device, which is a focus of this talk,
it turns out that the gap between programmable device and ASIC can be substantially
reduced.

Short bio: Youngsoo Shin received the Ph.D. degree in electronics engineering from Seoul
National University, Korea, in 2000. He worked at the University of Tokyo and IBM Watson Research Center before joining KAIST, Korea, in 2004, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His research interests are general field of CAD, in particular low-power, sequential optimization, high-level synthesis, and programmable logic.
He is serving as AE of TODAES and organizing and tpc members of many conferences.
